The route isn't settled, but the toll status is
No single fastest route between Garner and Knightdale has been verified, so this page will not name one. What is documented: the existing stretch of I-540 that wraps the northern and eastern side of Raleigh is a free interstate, and its eastern end connects to I-87, US 64, and US 264 near Knightdale. A separate southern leg, NC 540, would connect to I-40 once finished, but NCDOT lists that roughly 10-mile connection as Phase 2, still under construction, with completion projected for 2028.
What Knightdale PD takes as an online report
Knightdale's police department takes non-emergency incident reports online when there is no known suspect. The listed categories are specific: harassing phone calls, lost or stolen property, property or vehicle damage, hit and run, theft from a vehicle, and identity theft or credit-card theft. Camera footage of a stranger near a car, or a package taken from a porch, fits directly into those categories. The department's reporting page does not mention a resident camera registry of any kind. That is not evidence the town has no such program — the page that covers report filing simply does not address one.
Knightdale Development Services Issues Building Permits
Town of Knightdale Development Services staff review, invoice, and issue residential building permits directly — even though applications get submitted through the Wake County Permit Portal. Using the county's portal to apply is not the same as the county issuing the permit. Inspection staffing beyond that review-and-issue step was not independently confirmed.
Knightdale Station is the named growth area
That approval, filed under town project record S-3-13 and known as Knightdale Station, combines single-family and multifamily housing. It is not a finished-home count, but it is the growth area the town's own record names — the clearest sign of where residential construction is concentrated going forward.

Does Knightdale accept online police reports for a theft with no suspect?
Yes. The town's online reporting tool covers non-emergency incidents including theft from a vehicle, lost or stolen property, and property damage, as long as there's no known suspect.
Does the Town of Knightdale or Wake County issue a residential building permit?
Knightdale's own staff issue it directly, not Wake County. Development Services staff review, invoice, and issue the permit, even though the application itself is filed through the Wake County Permit Portal.
Is the free part of I-540 near Knightdale finished, or is it still under construction?
The existing I-540 near Knightdale is already open and free. The separate southern NC 540 connection from I-40 remains under construction, with completion projected for 2028.
